1988, 6th Form, Willows High, Tremorfa, Cardiff. The norm was what everyone else
in school was into. Kylie Minogue, Rick Astley, Madonna. Not us though. We liked
noise and chaos, experimenting and feedback, Tennants Super and Poppers. Making
music though not being able to play.
Charlie Brown started as an excuse for three school daze friends to be cooler
than da fuck. The core of the band consisted of David Lloyd (me) on vocals, Lee
Chick on bass and Matthew Scott on lead. There were other members over the years.
Emma Priddle and Chris Nurse on rhythm guitar whilst Simon Weston, Alex the DJ
and Steve of The Rockets drummed for us.
We had some favourable reviews and some shit ones. One of my favourite moments
was emptying the room of the so called Avant Garde elite of Howard Gardens Faculty
of Art and Design - during our one and only gig there. Emptying rooms was our
specialty - we loved it.
By now you are wondering what we sounded like. You can find out by visiting our
MP3.com
page and listening to the few tracks we have there.
Charlie
Brown Music T0 Stream.
Our career highlights included some interest being shown by the Rough Trade record
label and being booked to support Spiritualized at the Square Club before being
shunted out at the last minute. Oh aye, Matthew and Lee went on to form Jack.
Unfortunately, most of our best music never made it to tape. We have our one demo
and some rehearsal tapes, but unfortunately, we never recorded a proper gig or
our most accomplished songs.
We also made some nice posters, which
I heard of a couple of people pinching for their walls...
